Habitat Pictures, Blitz 2011 Day 4

Day 4 of Blitz Week 2011 for Habitat for Humanity! We were working on the center house with the UT Interfraternity and Panhellenic Groups.

Tuesday! Cold. Wet. Rainy. Miserable. not even the kind of rain that comes and goes…. more like an annoying mist that keeps slowly coming down, soaks into your clothes, and chills you to the bone.

It was not a very productive day. We made some headway on the siding, installed the front gable window, worked on window trim, and not much else. As stated before, it was cold, wet, rainy, and miserable. We didn’t even work till 4pm. Everyone stopped working around 3 or 3:30.

Now I have a little confession to make. By “we” I don’t mean me. I was totally wiped out after working on the house Saturday, and Sunday, and have only gone to the build on the weekdays for an hour or so around lunchtime to take pictures, get the scoop on what’s happening, and learn enough to post pictures and update the blog. By “we” I mean all the wonderful Habitat staff, the very dedicated crew leaders, and especially all of our amazing volunteers that keep coming back to build Habitat houses.

Drywall crews were working inside today. They were using mud that dries “in 45 minutes.” not going to happen with all the wet weather. We won’t be able to start painting the interior walls until Thursday. It’s going to be cutting it close to have the house ready by dedication on Saturday morning.

Last year the drywall, HVAC, electrical crews, etc worked in the evenings and at night on the houses. I wonder how that option compares to working during the day?

Hopefully Wednesday will be warmer.

Habitat Pictures, Blitz 2011 Day 3

Day 3 of Blitz Week 2011 for Habitat for Humanity! We were working on the center house with the UT Interfraternity and Panhellenic Groups.

Monday! Today we finished the roof, putting on all the shingles and installing the ridge vent. After finishing the roof we took off all the toe boards off the side of the roof. We also installed the exterior doors and did a lot more work on siding, and the siding on the front porch and the front porch roof. I got to spray paint the decorative front gable window black. It will make the front of the house look pretty, but people won’t be able to see inside the attice. We even took the stickers off the window. 🙂

Inside the house, the electrical crews were working installing all the wiring. Yesterday the plumbers and HVAC guys were working inside. After the electrical guys are finished, the house should be ready for drywall, and then we can start painting, cabinets, and trim.

Habitat Pictures, Blitz 2011 Day 2

Day 2 of Blitz Week 2011 for Habitat for Humanity! We were working on the center house with the UT Interfraternity and Panhellenic Groups.

Sunday! Today we felted the roof and started shingles. We also finished all the top plate and deadwood, installed all of the windows and made sure they were level, and we started the vinyl siding.

After the building was done for the day our homeowner brought his kids by to see the house. They wrote their names on their bedroom floors (on the concrete slab), and drew pictures on the floors. It was very touching to watch.

Tomorrow we will finish the roof, install the exterior doors, and continue working on siding.
