Neupogen Shots and Thursdays Surgery
Monday, Oct 24, 2011 – Today is going to be a long day.
7:30 AM we will be at the Vanderbilt Clinic for my 4th day of Neupogen shots. They don’t hurt that much, the nurses who give them are very nice, and I’m not having any bone pain yet. (knock on wood)
8:30 AM after the Neupogen Shots, we head to the Day Surgery Area to get set up for my Hickman Catheter placement, which is scheduled for 10:30 AM. This was last Thursday’s surgery that got postponed because the insurance company wasn’t doing their job. It’s a 10 minute procedure, prep takes about 2 hours, recovery time probably about the same, so maybe we’ll be done with the surgery process at 2PM. BUT WAIT! There’s more…
Tomorrow they will also check my bloodwork to see if it is time to start harvesting my stem cells. If we’re good to go, then we’ll start harvesting. If not, I get to have Mozobil to help stimulate my stem cell production even more.
It’s going to be a long day with everything that is going on. The catheter will go into my chest on the right side. The port will stay on my left side. I took a picture of my chest last night, to show how nice the right side looks without the catheter in it. After today, the catheter will be hanging out of my chest, and then when it is taken out there will be a scar there.
We appreciate your thoughts, prayers, love, peace, positivity, good energy, juju, etc during this long day and all of its events. Times are getting tougher now, and it’s important to remember that each thing that happens gets us one step closer to remission.

Resolution Achieved with Insurance Company
Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011 – I spoke with the case manager at the insurance company this morning after getting home from not going to the hospital. She explained that there was some missing information that she had just received, so now the insurance company could move ahead with approval for my procedure. What a headache. I spent an hour on the phone figuring things out. Very tiresome!
The plan is to continue with starting my Neupogen shots tomorrow on Friday, Oct. 21. I’ll get those once a day for the next week or so. My Hickman Catheter placement is moved to Monday, Oct. 24, at 10 AM. Any thoughts, prayers, and positive energy you can send our way during that time would be GREATLY appreciated.
The GOOD NEWS is that because there was the delay with the insurance company’s approval, I get to enjoy one more weekend without a line hanging out of my chest. There’s always a silver lining!
